Three Big 12 Conference schools will now sell beer at their football stadiums this fall. So the question is, is Texas Tech next to join the list? In short, no. Right now, Texas Tech Athletics said there hasn’t been any formal discussions on alcohol sales, but that doesn’t mean they’re opposed to the idea.
“We always talk about it after every season before another season what we can do to enhance fan experience and increase revenue,” said senior associate athletics director, Robert Giovannetti.
Oklahoma State University announced last week their decision to sell beer following behind University of Texas and West Virginia University, both which have sold beer for several years.
“We listen to our fan base and take in their input and considerations,”said Giovannetti. “We have to decide what’s best for Texas Tech University and Texas Tech Athletic Department.
Students welcomed the idea, many speaking about the positives that the extra revenue would bring to the university.
“It would be a good tax revenue source. Texas already does it and they’re making a lot of money,” said senior student, Marshall.
According to the Houston Chronicle, University of Texas made $1.8 million in alcohol sales its first year. The following year, they made $3.1 million.
But adding beer to the concession list is not as easy as cracking open a can.
“It’s not as easy as looking at it and saying you’d make this much money, there’s lots of different ways to look at it,” said Giovannetti. “We’re always looking, like any business, to increase our revenue and enhance our overall athletic department.”
No beer on the list yet but Texas Tech is adding new food concession items this fall.
