Lubbock-based non-profit Breedlove Foods sent a truck with 825,000 meals to the coast for Harvey disaster relief.
The semi-truck headed for San Antonio, but from there the goods will be dispersed to affected cities along the coast, from Corpus Christi to Rockport.
“So, that can impact over 825 thousand people along the coast,” Marketing and Donor Relations Coordinator Michelle Logan said. “That is how much nutrition we can pack into one semi.”
From its inception in 1994, Breedlove was started to help people during disasters just like Harvey.
“This is what we do all day every day,” Logan said. “Provide food to people in extreme need in different situations, for emergency situations or on-going help if it is needed. So our food is specifically for these types of events.”
Everything from a ready-to-cook soup to a peanut butter product called Vitanut, the food is dehydrated and packed for long distance travel. Breedlove said the food is packed with nutrients as well.
“It is all food, ready-to-use food and ready-to-cook food…and water,” Logan said. “High in nutritional value which is exactly what these people need.”
They partner with other companies too, like Essence water, who sent 30,000 bottles down in this same shipment.
“We have all of these different organizations in line, partnerships in line, and they know how to get the food to the people who need it the most right now,” Logan said.
They sent a truck last week as well, but said they don’t plan to stop anytime soon.
“As long as the need is there, we will continue to provide.”
