After a brutal hail storm swept through Lubbock, many car owners woke up Sunday to shattered windshields and dented frames.

“Sunday morning when people were walking by taking pictures of it, I kind of noticed it. It’s actually going to be picked up today and taken to a repair shop,” said Kurtis Ward, a South Lubbock homeowner whose car was totaled by the storm.

Glass repair shop Glass Doctor opened its doors over the weekend and worked extended hours on Monday, trying to get to all the customers who needed their windows repaired.

“You got body damage across the hoods, roofs and trunks of these cars, depending on where they were parked. It’s pretty bad damage. It’s not just glass right now,” said Neal Alexander, owner of Glass Doctor.

Their phones rang off the hook, booking them for the next couple days, but Alexander and his team worked through the afternoon to repair as many cars as they could.

While golf ball and baseball-sized hail damaged these cars, Alexander said anything smaller than that would most likely not damage a car.

However, to protect cars from future incidents, it is best to put it in the garage. Alexander said there are not many convenient options that can be placed on a car quickly that will protect against damage.

“If you don’t have a garage, that’s a hard call. Get a carport. I had a friend tell me last night he was in the middle of (the storm) and pulled into Sonic. Get those cars in the garage,” said Alexander.

While the storm caused a lot of damage to property, people like Ward know these things happen.

“It’s a misfortune, but it can be fixed,” Ward said. “You just have to roll with it. It’s kind of a headache.”

Alexander explained if the car window has a crack bigger than a dollar bill, its safest to take it into the shop to get replaced.
