It takes lots of volunteers to make child’s dreams come true across the South Plains.
They spend a lot of hours training and preparing for each child’s big wish.
Recently, the Make-A-Wish Foundation invited all of its volunteers for a get-together: a time to share ideas, get to know each other and learn about Wish kids.
“So I got involved with Make-A-Wish in 2011. I was asked to be a dancer in the Waltzing for Wishes, which is our big gala. Every year we have it, that’s where we raise a lot of money to be able to grant wishes to all the children of West Texas,” said dentist Jason White.
It all starts with training. The ladies at Texas Tech’s Chi Omega sorority often go through wish-granter training.
“So we decided to do wish granting training here at Chi O this week to kind of get some of the newer girls and older girls involved in Make-A-Wish,” said Carter Janes, Make-A-Wish volunteer.
The girls learned what it takes to be a wish granter.
“So I knew a little bit just being a Chi O here at Texas Tech. It’s really cool to see with this wish-granting training, what their hopes and strengths are and how they meld that into what their wish is going to be,” Janes said.
For those who have been volunteering for years now, they know granting a wish is much more to the child and family than just going on a trip or getting something they’ve always wanted.
“I’ve always been a supporter of kids foundations. I found a long time ago the power of hope. The power of a wish transcends so many things in the medical profession. When a child has hope and they have a wish granted they heal better, they’re happier and they fight and they win. The power of a wish is a lot more powerful than a lot of people give it credit for,” Kendall Howard, owner of Las Brisas said.
You just might get something in return if you’re thinking about volunteering.
“I encourage anyone out there that wants to be part of Make-A-Wish. It’ll change your life forever. If you’re not already involved with Make-A-Wish, get involved. Help these kids,” Howard said.
