The YWCA bought the former Kmart property on University Avenue and South Loop 289, and while they are still in the planning stages, they said they have big ideas in store.
“When you look at this building now, you see boarded-up windows and a parking lot that’s not very attractive. It really doesn’t give a great view of what Lubbock can be, and we see the potential here, and what we want to do is bring it to life and give vitality back to this neighborhood,” said Glenda Mathis, executive director of the YWCA of Lubbock.
They just purchased the building, but the next step in the process is creating the full design and starting construction.
The facility will cover the YWCA’s core initiatives including childcare, education, health and fitness. Mathis said their main focus is state-of-the-art classrooms.
This location is ideally located in the center of Lubbock, she said.
“People can get off the Loop or University. It’s great access for people. This particular neighborhood deserves more amenities, and we are excited to bring those,” said Mathis.
They do need community sponsors and donations, so if you would like to help, they said give them a call at 806-792-2723.
