A Kansas City woman is working to help a Lubbock boy, Maverick Dizmang, fight his battle with cancer.

The 3-year-old boy has been diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. We first met Maverick back in November 2014, when a blood platelet shortage in Lubbock was making it hard for him to get his cancer treatment.

On May 1, EverythingLubbock.com was at Maverick’s birthday party at the Texas Tech Therapeutic Riding Center. It was this story that caught the attention of Christiana Geyer-Phillips – all the way in Kansas City.

Geyer-Phillips reached out to EverythingLubbock.com by email earlier this week. She said she had liked Maverick’s Facebook page and has been following his story for the few months.

She said she wanted to raise awareness of Maverick’s situation. Maverick started chemotherapy again this week. His mother, Chey Vogeler, is a single mom and fighting a losing battle of providing for her family and being with  her sick son.

Geyer-Phillips is hoping by coming forward, more people will become aware of his family’s situation, and find the kindness to help them out.

Geyer-Phillips wants to lead community members to Maverick’s YouCaring and GoFundMe pages.

Hi Meredith-

I have no relationship with Maverick who you did a story on earlier this year.  But I did, through a connection on Facebook, see his page and started following his story. They do not know I am contacting you.

They sure seem to be struggling and it seems that they might benefit from a follow up story … to raise awareness.  His mom is having a hard time with the choice between staying with him, which is what the doctors have said would be best for him, and working so she can provide for her family.

I’m in Kansas City, and honestly have never done something like this before…but his story and struggles just touched me. And I am looking for ways to help them. Their Facebook page has only about 300 followers and her attempts to ask for help don’t seem to be gaining much traction.

I can’t imagine her stress between money and Maverick and doing what’s right. Can you help raise awareness of their situation?

Thank you
Christina Phillips
