Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury and Patrick Mahomes II will be featured on the cover of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine, the publication announced Wednesday as part of its unveiling of the 2016 edition.
The Red Raiders’ appearance on the 57th edition of “the bible of Texas football” marks their first appearance on the cover since 2008. The style of the magazine is a nod to the iconic 1963 cover of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football featuring Texas coach Darrel K Royal and quarterback Scott Appleton.
“It’s been a long time since there were this many compelling characters in the Lone Star State,” DCTF managing editor Greg Tepper said. “From all corners of the state, there are tremendous stories to tell. But for us, the idea of Kliff Kingsbury — the preeminent quarterback guru in the state — finally having his hand-picked signal-caller is too exciting to pass up.”
The Red Raiders come off a 2015 season in which Mahomes and Kingsbury guided an offense that finished the season ranked second in the nation in scoring offense (45.1 ppg), total offense (579.5 ypg) and passing offense (388.2 ypg), while leading the NCAA in plays gaining at least 10 yards (284) and third down conversion percentage (51.7). Mahomes became the 13th quarterback in NCAA history to amass 5,000 yards of total offense in a single season (5,112) to go along with 46 total touchdowns (36 passing, 10 rushing).
In addition, the magazine released its annual All-Texas College Teams, which feature four Red Raiders. Mahomes is the first team quarterback and he is joined by offensive lineman Baylen Brown and kicker Clayton Hatfield. Running back Justin Stockton was selected to the second team.
