The ninth Annual Vamos A Pescar, Let’s Go Fishing event takes place on Saturday at the Buddy Holly Lake. It is a chance for families to get together one last time before the Summer is over.
This event is free and open to the public, but anyone attending must have a child with them. It kicks off at 6 a.m. at the Buddy Holly Lake and families can fish without a fishing license until 2 p.m.
They can enjoy a free lunch and bait will be provided. The lake will be stocked with catfish.
Christy Matinez-Garcia started this event as a way to honor her father-in-law’s memory to go fishing one last time before he passed away.
“When he was in the recovery room he said to my husband and I ‘when I get out of here I want to go fishing,'” Martinez said. “He passed away the next morning. So it never came to fruition for him, but we decided to do something for dads and their children and now it is open to the whole family.”
In its ninth year, organizers are expecting crowds of 5,000 to be at the Buddy Holly Lake on Saturday.
There is no registration fee. All you need is your fishing pole and your family. They ask that you pre-register at www.letsgofishinglubbock.com to get a head count for lunch.
