The High Plains produces about 85 percent of Texas’ grapes, making it the Grape Capital of Texas. Grapes generally need a colder winter to produce good quality fruit. Recent drought conditions have caused growers to evaluate irrigation requirements.
“The drought has really made us aware about irrigation responsibilities we have this winter,” Andy Timmons, president of High Plains Winegrowers Association, said. “We probably have irrigated about three times on most of our vineyards. Most of the time, we may get by on just one per winter.”
