A new park is coming to the Hub City unlike one we’ve ever had, organized by the Astrom Angels they plan to break ground on Lubbock’s first indoor play park. Milestones Development & Play Park is planned to break ground in the Spring or Summer of 2019.
Cassie Johnston found out her daughter Bryce was diagnosed with Astrom syndrome when she was three years old. The rare genetic disorder causes all kind of medical complications. In 2012, her and her husband formed ‘Astrom Angels’ and since then have organized all kind of community events to spread awareness about the rare disease.
Two years ago, Johnston and her husband started brainstorming about a way they can create a place for children from all walks of life to have their own little paradise.
“There should be a place where all kids can come and play in a calm even environment where we don’t have the added stress of the weather and a place so that every single child can play on the equipment,” said Johnston. “Every child whether they are running on two legs or they are using a walker they can play on the equipment,”
The 20,000 square foot play park will feature a jungle safari room, a candy land and a home room with slides and a basketball court. Johnston said the park will even include four classroom for parent and children activities.
“It will be classes like sensory exploration, and imagination classes,” Johnston said.
The $3.3 million dollar project was approved by the City of Lubbock Parks and Rec Department, as long as 80% of the funds can be shown.
“We just kicked off our capital campaign to raise those funds and we have over 314,000 already committed,” Johnston said.
