BBB Advises Homeowners to Beware of Utility Scams

Now that it’s officially summer, the Better Business Bureau of the South Plains is advising homeowners to keep a watchful eye for utility scams. 

Madison Luscombe, Director of Communications for the BBB of the South Plains, says the summertime as well as the dead of winter, is when they receive the most calls regarding utility scams.


Those who fall victim sometimes wind up giving into the imposter’s demands over the phone and pay a bill they don’t actually owe, or even let them into their homes.

Luscombe advises that if a call sounds even slightly suspicious, it’s most likely a scam and to either hang up or shut the door immediately, and to call your utility company to check whether or not you actually owe money on a bill. 

One of the most common types of scam in the area tends to be of a person coming to your door and claiming to be with LP&L saying that your meter is broken or demanding money upfront.

“Never feel pressured to pay immediately when they say that you owe for a bill. Don’t let any random person walk into your home,” advises Luscombe. “Definitely ask for some kind of verification, whether that’s calling LP&L and asking if they have someone coming out to your house.”
