Lubbockites traded in their Thanksgiving dinner plates early this year for shopping bags to rack up on the Black Friday sales.

“We started cooking last night, trying to prepare all the food and prepare everything in time for Black Friday Shopping,” Shopper Michelle Polvado said. “Everything was planning around this.”

Major retailers, like Target and Best Buy, had lines around the building starting as early as 3 p.m. Thursday. Some shoppers said they enjoyed a Thanksgiving day brunch and then camped out early at their favorite stores to ensure they have a chance at the holiday deals.

“We got here around four o’clock,” Shopper Brytnee Brodayo said. “We went to my grandma’s and she cooked up a really good meal and then we just came over here.”

The South Plains Malls opened their doors at 5 p.m. to allow for crowd control for their stores.

“We’re really excited, obviously,” Mall Marketing Director Ashley Knox said. “Super fun events going on in our stores this evening. Some great door busters and give-away’s too tonight.”

The mall is open until midnight Thursday to allow for a new shift of employees to take over in the morning.

“Tomorrow morning they’ll have a different set of specials and door busters for those early birds that want to come out,” Know said. “We’ve got some special events going on: refreshment stations, photo booths, dancing. So really bringing the fun back to Black Friday and bringing all the fun to the shopping and the entire experience.”

The mall will open again at 6 a.m. Friday that will allow guests to line up inside starting at 5:30 a.m.

“It’s just nice to be able to get the time to just spend together and kind of get out of the stressfulness of the holidays and just have a good time together and have fun,” Shopper Alanna Martinez said.
