The city will be auctioning more than 200 cars up for auction Saturday at the Lubbock Wrecker Services. You can find all types of cars, but don’t let how the cars look fool you. They could be more useful than you think.
“It gives them the chance to be able to buy parts to keep their vehicles running,” said Dale Scott, general manager of Wrench-A-Part.
You may not believe it, but in this yard you can find anything from a Mustang to a classic Chevrolet pickup. They may or may not be in good condition.
“All cars here are sold as is. There’s no guarantee. Some come with keys, but there’s no guarantee those keys actually belong to the cars. It just what was found with the car,” Sgt. Corey Nunley with the Lubbock Police Department.
The city’s auction to sell abandoned cars keeps them from clogging the streets or neighborhood.
“It just looks horrible for the neighborhoods. It’s also an EPA hazard. leaking fluid or the hoods off of it and the batteries getting rained on,” said Scott.
Dale Scott with Wrench-A-Part says it helps his business, your broken car and the environment.
“When it comes out of the yard, gets crushed and we ship it off to the mills and then they actually recycle it and turn it into other metal products,” Scott said.
Depending on the car, it could range from $200 to $2,000. Lubbock police said they pick up these cars for a number of reasons. They may have been towed and never picked up or involved in car crashes.
“Some of these cars may have been people have been arrested out of and then decided not to claim it after it was impounded. Some were just abandoned on the streets,” said Sergeant Nunley.
The money made at the auction pays back the city for fees associated with the cars or the companies that had them.
“This isn’t an auction designed to make money for the city. What it is is to clear out these vehicles that have been abandoned that are unclaimed,” said Nunley.
And also for people who want a good deal.
“The more cars we can buy, the more inventory we can have for our customers that come in everyday,” said Scott.
it starts at 9 a.m. on May 19 at Lubbock Wrecker Services on 3209 E Slaton Hwy, and it’s cash only.
