The City of Littlefield is fighting to get a public pool for their town. They’ve submitted an application to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to receive a $500,000 grant to help pay for it.
“Things like this just helps the whole community and gives value to people wanting to live here,” said Mitch Grant, the City of Littlefield city manager.
Because it would be built solely on donated funds, it’s been a challenge.
Grant said they should know if they get the money next February.
“It’ll be something the community’s really proud of once we can gather enough money to get it built,” said Grant.
So this time, along with the application, they’ve attached more than 40 handwritten letters from the kids who would enjoy it most.
“It’s a good way to convey the message to some adults. This is important. While you may not use it yourself, that there is a segment of our community that really would use a facility like this a lot,” said Littlefield Mayor Eric Turpen.
The sweet letters explain why they need an aquatic center.
“If you don’t know the need for a pool, read through those letters and that really kind of makes you see what we really need,” said Grant.
As of right now, if anyone living in Littlefield wants to go to a public pool, they would have to drive at least 30 minutes. The City of Littlefield hopes the kids’ letters will give them an extra push.
“The community’s been good about the donations and really steady about doing that, and we just think it will be a great amenity for our town to have that, that thing that we’re missing,” said Grant.
