The City of Lubbock hosts a monthly meeting to allow residents who are appealing inaccurate water bills to state their case in front of a board.
“This process allows the citizens to present their case in front of their peers that are empathetic but have guidelines they have to follow,” Aubrey Spear, the director of water and utilities for the City of Lubbock, said.
The board is made up of different people with various backgrounds when it comes to knowledge of water.
Spear said these meetings are not for people who cannot afford their bills, but for people who believe their bill was inaccurate.
“We usually use about 19,000 gallons. Our highest was 33,000 gallons. So for us to get a bill that said 75,000 gallons was crazy,” Susan Sparks, a local resident who appealed her bill, said.
Spear said the board will evaluate each case.
“Once staff reviews that, then we say what we can or can’t do. That’s when we tell them they are on the next water board appeals agenda,” Spear said.
