The City of Lubbock wants to remind citizens that there are four Citizen Convenience Stations to drop off fresh-cut Christmas trees.
The landfill will mulch the fresh-cut trees, making this an easy way to go green. In the spring, the mulch will be given out for free.
“If you’re putting your fresh-cut Christmas tree, it’s basically going to fill up the dumpster, so it keeps them out of the dumpster. It keeps it out of the alleys, and it keeps them out of the landfills,” said Penny Morin, solid waste manager for collections.
There have already been a lot of people taking advantage of this service.
“(The tree has) done its job, and now it’s time to recycle it and get it out of the house before it catches fire,” said Shane Haas, who recycled his tree Wednesday afternoon.
“We like a real tree because of the smell and the look. It’s not perfect, and it’s kind of nice to have something like that around Christmas to make you feel more connected with nature,” said Haas.
It’s also important to remember to remove all decorations, the metal stand and any plastic before putting the trees in the stations’ dumpsters.
“What you want to do is you want to save space for items that really do need to be landfilled. We live in an area where we don’t have many items that we can recycle. When we have something that can be recycled, we want to be able to make that effort,” said Morin.
The roll-off dumpsters located outside the gates of the Citizen Convenience Stations located at:
• 208 Municipal Drive
• 7308 Milwaukee
• 4307 Adrian Street
After January 8, 2018, and throughout the month of January, the roll-offs will be located inside the gates, and residents can drop-off fresh-cut Christmas trees from 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Monday – Saturday.
