On Wednesday morning dozens gathered on Broadway street in front of the new Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Center for a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The event drew crowds of community members, city officials and various law enforcement for a tour of the new facility.
The building is located at 712 Broadway, and used to serve as the old jail. The original building had been built in the 1930s, and over the years had seen major need for improvement.
The new facility has open hallways and separate sectors for the different departments that make up LSO such as the Patrol and SWAT units, Emergency Communications, dispatch…etc.
Right now, LSO is composed of more than 500 people, with just over 150 law enforcement personnel.
LSO officials say the move was a long time coming, and that the new space will provide room for more opportunities and growth.
“And that was what was so imperative about this project, that although we function great and we’ve achieved a lot of things, we were spread out,” said Sheriff Kelly Rowe. ‘This finally got us an opportunity where we can get everybody under one roof and finally have some effective command and control and the ability to get in and people to have the room and the spaces they need.”
