Hodges Community Center and the City of Lubbock teamed up to host a cleanup for several central Lubbock neighborhoods. Council Member Shelia Patterson-Harris of District Two, showed up to help out with unloading and organizing bulky items.
“These are things people do not want and need to rid themselves of. A lot of times people just put them in the alley way thinking Solid Waste will pick them up. So we want to give an opportunity to get rid of those things legally, so they can make sure they are taken care of,” Patterson-Harris said.
The goal of the cleanup was to allow residents to bring in large items like mattresses, large appliances and couches so they wouldn’t end up in alleyways. Patterson-Harris said there were two large roll-off bins on site to help cleanup.
“The folks in the community have come, I can’t even tell you how many trucks we’ve had. We had a truck here and one just left and one just came by to see what they’re allowed to bring in and we’re trying our best to load them,” Patterson-Harris said.
One of the volunteers through the Hodges Community Center said she hopes this can help cleanup and motivate neighborhoods to keep their streets and alleyways clean.
“Its really great to help cleanup the community. Every bit counts to make the community safer and better for everyone,” Katie Wirz, a Volunteer through Hodges Community Center said.
