Injuries are bound to occur if your child’s playing contact sports like, football, volleyball and even cheerleading. While you’re cheering on your child, you’re also hoping they stay healthy and doctors with Covenant Medical Group are trying to make that happen.

“The assessment is free of charge,” said Dr. Courtney Cowden about the free sports injury clinic.

Since football’s a violent sports he said it made sense to have the clinic set around the season.

“We have it Saturdays, mainly for football season trying to help people who have the game the night before get assessed and hopefully back on their feet by the time the school week comes back around again and they can know what the game plan is.”

Even if your athlete mentions something’s bothering them Dr. Cowden said its best to get it checked out.

“If you’re wondering if you should come in, maybe that’s a good idea to come in and get checked out,” said Dr. Cowden.

He said they try to get patients in and out in about 30 minutes, its a quick trip that could keep you in the game.

“I’ve had a couple of student athletes who have come in that had their knees bothering them for a while. They were swelling and having a hard time playing. We worked them up and low and behold they had an ACL tear they were not aware of.” Dr. Cowden recalled.

“Once we got them on the path and got them fixed up they’re playing now and back to full effort, which wouldn’t have been possible without doing that.”

The walk-in clinic runs on a first-come, first-serve basis every Saturday starting at 9 a.m. through mid-November. Covenant Health Plus is located at 7601 Quaker Avenue.
