A San Antonio mother calls it a life sentence…living without her youngest son. He died by suicide after suffering through months of Cyber Bullying. Maurine Molak says losing her son is the worst thing that ever happened to her. Now she is sharing the story as much as possible.
Molak says, “I want to talk to parents and I want to share my story and tell them about the things I wish I had done differently.”
Molak spoke to parents at Frisco ISD, about David’s Law, the legislation named after her son, a San Antonio Eagle Scout who took his own life after relentless bullying online. Molak states, “there’s no more boys will be boys girls are just mean or bullying it’s a rite of passage. With the introduction of social media and technology that has completely changed the landscape.”
Stephanie Cook is the managing director of guidance and counseling with Frisco ISD and she says, “I think the biggest thing we hear from our students that’s changed they never get to leave it the phone goes home with them and those comments fo home with them and they’re all night long.”
The law passed in 2017 making cyber bullying a crime in Texas…requires schools to step in…even if it’s happening off-campus. And it opens parents of bullies up to liability if they don’t intervene when they could have.
Frisco ISD Council of PTA’s President, Melinda Samberson says, “if we can all do that together my friends and community members those kinds of things then maybe we can kind of keep each other accountable to do more and to bring this message to the forefront.”
A mother just trying to get her message out to other parents to find a way into their kids cyber lives…because their actual lives may depend on it.
