In 1963, Maureen Davis started delivering Meals for Meals on Wheels. 55 years, two knee replacements and a hip replacement later, she is still going.
“You are always looking for ways to help people,” Davis said. “We decided this was a very good thing and there are people that need food and cannot get out. That was our calling.”
Davis made friends along the routes she takes across the Hub City. She knows that sometimes she might be that person’s only visitor and looks after the well being of each client.
“I just visit with them for a while,” Davis said. “It does not take too much time out of your day, month or year.”
She said that watching the Meals on Wheels program grow to what it is today has been really heart-warming. She credits the generous Lubbock community for allowing this organization to thrive.
“This organization is Lubbock,” Davis said. “I think that says something for a community that they can make something like this go so well and I am going to do this as long as possible.”
Every year at Christmas, instead of buying presents, Davis and her family make a donation to Meals on Wheels.
Meals on Wheels is always looking for volunteers to deliver meals. If you would like to get involved, head to lubbockmealsonwheels.org.
