Lubbock ISD, Lubbock Cooper ISD, and Frenship ISD  have been quick to take different initiatives to lend a helping hand to school districts along the Texas coast and in the Houston area.

Rush Elementary 4th grade teacher, Gayla Bursiaga helped to initiate an LISD school supply drive, where students and families have started to bring things in to help students and teachers in the damaged areas get back on their feet again.

“No one in the school would know what it would be like to be in their shoes, but this is something we can do even from far away, this is how we can help,” Bursiaga said.

Rush Elementary is helping two elementary schools in the Conroe School District near Houston. Fourth grader, Danelle Mccourt said she has been thinking about the students having to start their school year off in such a stressful way.

“I would be really scared, but if I knew some of my Texans that I don’t even know, if I knew that some people actually are working to help me I would feel so much better,”  Mccourt said.

Over in pirate country, Lubbock Cooper is holding a T-shirt drive and a loose change drive for the schools affected by Harvey, they have also welcomed a few evacuees into their district. Fifth grade math teacher, Anita King said she has a sweet new students in her classrooms that fled from Houston.

“It’s devastating what has happened in our great state of Texas, and we just want them to feel comfortable, they are enrolled in our school and we are happy to have them here,” King said.

Over at Frenship ISD, Assistant Principal Elisha Reese said they have raised over $1,000 worth of gift cards for their sister school in Houston, and it’s only been a day.

“We are trying to stic to the general gift cards, home improvement, home depot, Walmart, things like that,” Reese said. “I know a lot of people have always helped us and that’s just what Texans do, we take care of our own,”
