Dog in bad shape brought into Lubbock Animal Shelter

After a small Chihuahua was brought into Lubbock Animal Services, a picture of the neglected-looking dog has gone viral after the community’s concern for the pet.

“Our first response is to make sure they are fed and warm and get checked out by the vet. We want to see if it’s because they are sick or because of their age,” Deaon Byrant, shelter supervisor, said.

Byrant said having dogs and cats come in rough conditions isn’t rare.

“Sadly, we see that on a regular basis, on a varying degree,” Byrant said.

LAS evaluates each situation differently. Byrant said sometimes old age and health can be mistaken for neglect.

“If it’s an issue where we think we need to look into it, we will contact the owners and ask if they have seen a vet,” Byrant said.

If you want LAS to look into a situation for a pet you are concerned about, please contact the shelter.
