Texas Tech Police said there were five reported sex offenses in Texas Tech campus dorms in 2016 and there were 10 in 2017. Camus Police Lieutenant Amy Ivy said it’s common for college kids to not report the incidents, at all.

“A lot of the individuals are afraid to come forward with the sexual assault. So they just keep it to themselves. They don’t even tell their family or friends. We strongly encourage individuals to report they may be involved in,” said Ivy.

But students should know they should always contact them if they need help.

“They never know who may else has fallen victim so it just takes one person to speak out to hopefully be able to encourage others to speak out as well on sexual assaults,” Ivy explains, “Be smart when it comes to alcohol. A lot of these sexual assaults involve some type of alcohol. Between one or both parties. Always have a friend of the same sex stay with you.”

If you’re a student and a victim of sexual assault, call Texas Tech Police. You can also report a Title IX here.
