A local resident is upset after receiving a violation from the City of Lubbock stating the bushes in their front yard were an obstruction of view.

“I have to cut these bushes down to three feet height. To do that during this time of year it would kill them and my father and me planted these back in 1983,” Billy West, the owner of the home said.

West said the bushes stand between four and a half and six feet tall but he’s never received any sort of complaint the whole 30 years they’ve been there.

“Why do I have to cut mine down? They’ve been here this long and nobody has ever complained until now. One person complained in thirty years that she can’t see stuff coming when backing out of her driveway,” West said.

West said the code enforcement officer told him someone had complained and that the bushes needed to be fixed or taken down within 10 days. But he said they don’t understand how much these bushes mean to him.

“I was very upset. That is part of my mom and my dad. That is what is left of my mom and dad here. That’s one of the last things I have of my parents in this house. My parents passed away last year, my mom passed away in July,” West said.

The City of Lubbock Codes Department said they are willing to work with the public on these issues as long as they reach out for help.
