When it comes to Halloween costumes, sometimes homemade is the way to go. One Abernathy family said they have been doing it for years, and it’s never too late to get started.
“They just love it,” said Amanda Anderson, who makes homemade costumes.”They are so into dressing up for the holiday, and you would think for four boys, my makeup would be safe, but it’s not.”
The Anderson boys have been trick-or-treating in style for years, with this holiday as no exception. While it may seem like a lot of work, the Andersons said it’s more fun than trouble.
“It really is a group effort, but we really come together as a family,” said Ryan Anderson. “We’ll talk about what the boys want to do, and then we come up with new ways on how we get to accomplish it.”
They say they start with something basic, like a mask, and build from there. The goal to turn something old or worn down into something new.
“Hot glue is your friend. Safety pins, duct tape are all amazing, too,” said Amanda. “If you take it that one more step, it really does go a long way and really makes great memories for the kids.”
The Andersons say it is important to cherish these little moments, because before you know it, your kids will be grown up and not worrying about their Halloween costumes.
“We only have them at this age for a short amount of time,” said Ryan. “Soon they’ll be off to college, or getting married, or starting a career, and we want to focus on these moments so they can do it themselves for when they have their own families.”
