One family is breathing a sigh of relief as 72-year-old Dilcy Collins was found hours after she walked out of her daughter’s home and disappeared.
Collins suffers from dementia and was missing for four hours until she was found at Flying J’s near the Marsha Sharp Freeway.
“She started crying, and she wanted to know where she was and what did she do,” said Darin Collins, her son. “That was her two questions: ‘What did I do, and where am I?'”
Within hours, her family had gathered several friends and neighbors to help track Dilcy down. Darin says it was this group effort that brought his mother back home.
“At least a group of 20 to 25 had come out to help us,” said Darin. “They were so helpful asking us what areas we checked, where else she could have gone.”
The police were also on the scene as they set up neighborhood patrols. A sergeant remained at her house just in case she came back.
“They did an awesome job. Each officer that was there, I commend them, appreciate them, and thank all of them,” said Darin.
Now that Dilcy is safe at home, her son said they will have a lot to consider to make sure she does not sneak out of the house again.
“We’re gonna have to figure something out,” said Darin. “Maybe a new lock, electronic tagging, whatever we can do to make sure she’s safe.”
