First Public Dog Park Officially Opens In Lubbock

It was all paws on deck at the grand opening for the City of Lubbock’s first public dog park.
 
“We have fought for this. We went in front of the council and watched it come together,” Valerie Brookes, a local dog owner, said. 
 
Mayor Dan Pope, alongside other City Council members, cut the ribbon and opened the gate to the new park. The park is 2.64 acres, split one side for large dogs and another for small dogs weighing less than 30 pounds.
 
The park was built on already owned city land in Mackenzie Park, just west of Joyland. 
“It’s good to bring the people together and bring dogs out and keep them active,” Melissa Unruh, a local dog owner, said.
 
The city is working on a second dog park, which Mayor Pope said should open in just a few weeks. That one will be located at Clapp Park.

CANYON RUN DOG PARK TO OPEN APRIL 20
Parks and Recreation will host a ribbon cutting for the opening of the Canyon Run Dog Park in Mackenzie Park on Friday, April 20, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. Parks and Recreation, Lubbock City Council and the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the Canyon Run Dog Park to the public. Amenities for the dog park include a 2.64 acre large dog area for dogs 30 pounds and over, a 1.02 acre small dog area for dogs under 30 pounds, double gates, sidewalks, benches, shade trees, a restroom, and dog-friendly water fountains. The Canyon Run Dog Park is the first of two recently constructed dog parks to open and is located inside Mackenzie Park on Cesar E. Chavez Drive west of Joyland Amusement Park. The second dog park, Hub City Unleashed, is located inside Clapp Park and will be open in a few weeks.  
After the ceremony, Canyon Run Dog Park will be open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Listed below are the rules for City of Lubbock dog parks:
Dog Park Rules
    Use park at your own risk.
    Owners are legally responsible for the actions and behavior of their dog(s) at all times.
    Dogs must be leashed while entering and exiting the dog park.
    Dog waste must be cleaned up by their owners IMMEDIATELY.
    Owners must be within the dog park and supervising their dog(s) with leash readily available.
    Dog handlers must be at least 16 years of age.
    Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times.
    Dogs should be under voice control.Excessive barking is not allowed.
    All dogs must wear a collar with a current rabies tag and identification.
    Owners should fill any holes their dog(s) digs.
Prohibited:
    Human and dog food and treats
    Glass containers
    Dogs in heat
    Sick dogs
    Aggressive dogs
    Puppies under 4 months
