Heavy rain throughout Lubbock caused not only flooding on roadways but also washed away several wild animals homes.

“A lot of animals are being washed out of their dens, such as the skunks and the possums, the rabbits and little squirrels are falling out of trees,” Gail Barnes, the Executive Director for the South Plains Wildlife Center said.

She said due to the rain, not only do the animals become displaced but it also changes their hunting schedules.

“If we get as much rain as predicted, were going to see more and more wildlife coming out and hunting for food during the day. The ones that are nocturnal and hunt at night, when its raining at night they aren’t going to be able to hunt at night,” Barnes said.

Even though she said it’s unlikely your pets with have an interaction with any of these animals, with the change in their hunting habits, it’s a good idea to keep your cats and dogs inside.

“I would keep your cats and dogs inside, if you leave your dogs outside make sure they’re in a fenced in area. There not going to be less scared, they will be weary of us, do not feed them do not feed them at all and make sure your domestic animals are vaccinated,” Barnes said.
