The growth of hotels in the Lubbock area has increased drastically in the past three years according to Rob Meyer, the President of the Lubbock Hotel Motel Association.
“If you see the hotels were building right now, they probably looked at these numbers in 2014 when the numbers were good,” Meyer said.
Meyer said back in 2012 Lubbock didn’t have enough hotels to support the incoming traffic and that attracted buyers to start building. But he said since the process to build a hotel takes about three years now Lubbock has more supply then demand.
“‘We said ‘oh my gosh we need hotels.’ So then everybody built and were still building. There is a big time gap in buying the land, finding a contractor, actually getting the construction going then opening it,'” Meyer said.
With Texas Tech being the big attraction in town, Meyer said the city needs to find something to help more tourists to the Hub City.
“What Lubbock really needs is something that makes people come here,” Meyer said.
