On April 28, 2019, the City of Lubbock will be the hub for hundreds of runners from across the region for the 2nd Annual Mayors Marathon.
Last year more than 1,100 runners participated in the run and Mayor Pope said he plans to take part in the run again this year.
“I’ve always been a runner; it provides me peace of mind. Helps me clear my mind,” Pope said. “A lot of it is mental and actually frankly spiritual, too.”
Pope said this is more than just a run, it’s an event that will bring the community together and encourage residents to live healthier lifestyles.
“We created a Mayor’s Fitness Council along with the Health Science Center and with the Chamber, just to encourage people to live active, healthy lifestyles,” Pope said.
He said they’ve created a family friendly event with a number of different running options. From a 5K, to a half marathon, a full marathon and a relay marathon, even a kids fun run; he said there will be something for everyone.
In addition, Pope said he expects to see runners coming from neighboring states, due to the fact that the Mayor’s Marathon is a qualifier run for the Boston Marathon.
Registration for the event is underway and entry fees vary, based on the run people choose to participate in. For more information and to register for the run, visit: https://lbkmarathon.com/.
