On Monday, the city of Lubbock began its Broadway Striping Project, making way for more bikes lanes in the Hub City.
The project will reconfigure Broadway with a continuous left turn lane and bicycle lanes from University Avenue to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The stretch of road work is about three miles long.
City crews began measuring and re-marking the new lanes lines Monday morning and will continue to do so through Wednesday, June 21st. On Thursday, crews will begin the new striping.
Local cyclists like Carol Swinconos, a member of the West Texas Cycling Association and vice president of the Lubbock Bicycle Club, say that the addition of more lanes has been a long time coming and that it addresses an important safety issue.
“Lubbock it’s just hard to get around on a bicycle. We are thrilled to have this project come up because of the fact it provides safety for us to get us out of the traffic as best as possible,” said Swinconos. “We’re [cyclists] exposed, more so than a motorcycle. So, to have more bicycle lanes that would be a blessing.”
The bike lanes project is expected to be complete by the end of July 2017, before students and faculty return back to the University. No parking will be restricted and business access will remain open at all times.
Drivers are encouraged to use caution and drive slow in the work zones.
