Our local law enforcement risk their lives every day to keep us safe. Today, dozens gathered to surprise deserving DPS Lieutenant Bryan Witt with the First Responder Distinction Award. He said being a part of the Department of Public Safety means more to him than you think.
“I grew up the son of a state trooper that retired so it’s always kind of been in my blood. He was a great example of how to treat people,” said Witt.
He said he does the job to protect and serve you.
“I’ve had a great career and one of the keys is treating people fairly and showing the community that you care for them,” Witt said.
He started DPS school when he was 22 years old and has never expected anything in return for doing his job. He said, “Our families sacrifice, our friends sacrifice and we sacrifice ultimately sometimes, but what a special reward seeing what the impact you can give a community. Saving a life.”
This award wasn’t exactly what he had in mind walking into the meeting.
“I was supposed to come up and give a little presentation on the Civilian response to active shooter events so that’s how I was kind of tricked into coming,” said Lieutenant.
“I was like ‘Do you need any equipment set up or anything?’ and he’s like, ‘No, I can just do it and talk about the academy, as well.’ I was like ‘Perfect!’ And you know it all kind of happened,” said Amaris Garcia with the Quick Quack Carwash and a member of the Kiwanis Club Member.
But these organizations decided it was time to give first responders what they deserve.
“Because, you know, it’s a tough job and so it’s one of our ways to truly show that we appreciate them,” said Garcia.
Witt said he didn’t suspect a thing, but it’s been an honor.
“To go out and serve these communities with the risks that that may be our last shift that we take,” he said.
The Kiwanis Club of Lubbock has teamed up with Quick Quack Car Wash to present the First Responder of Distinction Award to honor the outstanding dedication, bravery, and service of first responders in the Lubbock Community. This will be a monthly award and presentation.
