Dozens of new jobs are on the way after WL Plastics says it is expanding its manufacturing and is looking to invest millions in a new facility.

“We are so excited,” said John Osborne, president and CEO of the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance (LEDA). “WL Plastics is a global company with nine operations, and we are so excited that they chose Lubbock to build their pipe here.”

The company will be investing $17 million into the new facility, creating at least 40 new jobs.

“Manufacturing jobs are so important because it means you can sell those products to other places, and when you do, that money comes right back here to our own community,” said Osborne.

LEDA also announced a partnership between Texas Tech University and the South Plains College to create a new Lubbock Coding Academy.

“There are so many jobs now that are asking for coders,” said Osborne. “We need to create more opportunities for this to happen and so that is why we are so excited to have the new coding academy coming to Lubbock.”

Workforce Solutions said the academy will also increase the choices job seekers have when looking for employment.

“We are so excited about the coding academy,” said Martin Aguirre, CEO of Workforce Solutions. “We don’t have this in the community, and it’s definitely something that can bring us to the next level.”

The Lubbock Coding Academy is expected to start enrolling in the spring of 2019. Classes for the nine-month program will be offered at the South Plains College Lubbock Center.
