Volunteers and community members came out to help clean and fix up Legacy Play Village. The large multi-structure outdoor play area was built in 2002 for children within the community but not funded through the City of Lubbock.
“There is just a lot of normal wear and tear. All this wood structure has detracted a little bit more than what was imagined but keep in mind this place is over ten years old. Since the wood just detracts over time it has to be replaced or it has to be fixed,” Deborah Finlayson, a volunteer for the playground said.
Finlayson said since being built the village has suffered vandalism and the “West Texas weather” but she said one of the biggest issues is people who use the facility not cleaning up after themselves.
“The saddest thing is probably the trash. Like hello Lubbock, Texas community, pick up your darn trash. I don’t understand why people don’t pick up after themselves. It’s not my responsibility. It’s one of the most discouraging things. You’re always going to have vandalism, you’re always going to have wear and tear but the one thing this community could do it please pick up your own trash,” Finalyson said.
The group organizes about two to three cleanups every year, if you’re looking to volunteer you can visit their website here.
