Police officers across Lubbock are now enforcing the new no texting and driving law. The law allows officers to pullover and cite people for writing, looking or receiving any electronic message while driving.
Lubbock Independent School District Police said a law had been in place forbidding drivers to use any cell phone usage while in the school zone, with the school zone lights flashing. But now, they said this new law will allow them to pull any one over using their phone at anytime.
“We want people to be safe while driving, especially near the school because our kids are our most important resource and we want to keep them safe,” Jody Scifres, Chief of Police for LISD said.
Chief Scifres said since the new law has been put into place they’ve yet to pull anyone over, but he said they do keep their eyes out for it.
“We have a lot of traffic in Lubbock, we have a lot of pedestrian traffic, especially around schools,” Scifres said “With this new ordinance in place it gives us more enforcement for serious issues with driving.”
