A family from Littlefield is heartbroken after they walked outside and saw their 1-year-old Maltese named Charlie being killed.
“It was awful. I couldn’t do a thing and he was such a loving dog. I just screamed for help, and there was no one home. I couldn’t go in the yard because the dogs were growling at me,” Kathrien Renfro, the owner of the 1-year-old Maltese, said.
During the attack, Renfro said she called police but the responding officers were the owners of the dogs, who are her next-door neighbors.
“I called the dispatch office, and the two officers that showed up were the two officers who live next door and own the dogs,” Renfro said.
She said the following day, she asked for a police report but the office said they didn’t have one on file. She said it’s been a constant battle to keep the fence up because the dogs next door continuously knock it down.
“It’s really scary because we never know if she’s going to push enough to get through the fence to knock it down,” Renfro said.
Renfro said the German Shepard next door had attacked another one of her small dogs last year, wounding its nose, but the dog did live.
Littlefield Police Chief Ross Hester said this type of situation should be handled by Animal Control. Renfro said Animal Control never showed up. Chief Hester said he couldn’t confirm or deny whether they showed up.
