Volunteers and artists involved in the Cliffhouse Project started cleaning up and prepping the old abandoned Cliffhouse property on 500 East Broadway.
“We kind of had an idea to have a pop-up show over here. When we asked for permission it grew into a much larger effort and our ideas were well accepted by the Guadalupe Economic Services, who owns the property. So not only will it be a pop-up show but it will also be the first stitch effort that will turn this place into a brand new arts and community organic arts center someday,” Chiemsee Holder, the Curator of the Cliffhouse Project said.
The Cliffhouse property used to be the Cliffhouse Restaurant that closed in the 1980’s. Holder said it would be the best location for the show and a step in the right direction for the revitalization of East Lubbock.
“All these original old brick buildings and a lot of the architecture is barely hanging on out here and could really use some love. It’s a really crazy when you start thinking about the potential this side of town has. Someone just needs to start paying attention to it,” Holder said.
The Cliffhouse project will have it’s next volunteer cleanup day on August 12th. The show will be on September 19th.
“I am hoping so or part of one, there has been a movement to revitalize the east side of town for awhile now, it just hasn’t been heard loud enough,” Holder said.

Details:
Through a series of volunteer days, we’ll be doing the prep work on the Cliffhouse property to get ready for the show. Volunteer Day 1 will focus on clearing the cement floor inside the building; pulling up some wood planks, clearing out old tile/debris, getting rid of a few stray plants and baby trees, and a little trash pick up. If you’re a handyman, fabulous! If not, no worries! Any helping hand we can get is greatly appreciated! The Dominos on MLK and Parkway will be graciously providing pizza!
A few things to remember: comfortable attire and closed toe shoes are recommended, and don’t forget your sunscreen! We will provide gloves and bug spray. There is no electricity or running water/bathrooms. Feel free to bring any tools you feel will be beneficial, just make sure they’re battery-operated and charged if need be. We’ll be jammin some tunes via Bluetooth.
Feel free to invite your friends. We hope to see you there!
