Gene Messer Chevrolet donated school supplies to Bayless Elementary School students and teachers. Last fall, they donated supplies like pencils and crayons, but this semester, it was for the teachers and what they needed.
“School supplies are very expensive, and schools work on pretty tight budgets and for them to want to reach out and help support the school is fantastic,” said Amy Stephens, Bayless Elementary principal.
What some people do not realize is that mid-year, teachers struggle to maintain supplies for their kids.
“Expo markers are for math, and so you get to the point when you’re reaching in the bucket and trying to find the marker that’s not dried out, and so those things run out pretty quickly,” said Stephens.
That is why the Gene Messer Chevrolet team decided to step in.
“We got markers, we got pencils, things that teachers use on a daily basis. We know sometimes teachers have to come out of their pocket, so we wanted to help them out so they wouldn’t have to do that as much,” said Jonathon Lucio, with Gene Messer Chevrolet.
They will be back in August to donate some more.
“They were so excited, and one of the things that were really cool, they asked what we needed so the teachers kind of got to tell them, ‘I really need some Clorox wipes’ or ‘I really need this and that.’ And so they tailored their drive to meet our teachers’ needs, and that is fantastic,” said Stephens.
“Especially since we’re just down the street from where they live, it’s our elementary school in our community. That’s why we wanted to help them out,” said Lucio.
If you would like to donate school supplies, you can drop them off at the Gene Messer Chevrolet location at 1302 S. Loop 289.
