A local family has spent their year collecting toys for the annual Toys For Tots drive here in Lubbock.
“Toys For Tots is local. They stay within the Lubbock County. It’s not sent off to New York or California. We know the kids in this area will have some type of Christmas,” David Baker said.
David, along with his wife Lavell Baker, gathered a total of 4,678 toys to donate. They said they set up donation barrels at Dollar Generals across Lubbock.
“We’re hoping we can get more accumulated before the holidays because we leave the barrels out,” Lavell said.
Toys For Tots Director First Sgt. Orlando Castillo said even with the large and generous donation from the Bakers, they are still short of toys.
“We are 20,000 toys short. Historically, we’re always hurting in the females department for ages 8 to 15 years old. I’ve never seen it like this before: I’m short on everything,” Sgt. Castillo said.
