The Better Business Bureau wants to warn local businesses about an uncommon scam going around.
The incident report shows an employee at a local food shop got a call from someone who said they were from the corporate office.
They told the employee the shop was under investigation, and they were going to be taken over the next day. The scammer asked the employee to count the cash in the register and then put that money in gifts cards. The person on the phone also told the employee to scratch off the numbers on the gift cards.
“You should probably not do that and call the number for your supervisor that you know is their number and be like, ‘Hey did you just call me to ask about this?'” said Greg Linder, president of the Better Business Bureau of the South Plains. “There’s not a ton that can be done about it at this point, but it is a good area for businesses to maybe add some training on maybe the responsibilities of the person who is counting down ’til the night.”
The BBB has seen this type of scam happen around three to four times in the past six years in Lubbock. Linder said if you get that type of phone call, it should set off some red flags. He said it could be a learning lesson for other businesses around town.
“Reinforce with your employees kind of the chain of command and what happens to the money when you know everything is changing, be it a shift change or the business is closing down for the night,” said Linder.
He said if you get a suspicious phone call, don’t hesitate to call your supervisor.
