Local game wardens use new search and rescue drone for operations

Local game wardens are adding a new set of eyes in the sky. The new Unmanned Aircraft System is the latest drone to be used to aid search-and-rescue missions.

“This is no toy,” said game warden Aaron Sims. “This is a piece of equipment that could potentially save somebody’s life.”

The drone will be sent ahead of game wardens to spot hazardous spots from miles away. This way, game wardens will be able to know the worst areas to avoid and help them be more efficient.

“We’ve always been involved with search-and-rescue operations and can be put in really dangerous positions,” said Sims. “This tool will now be at our disposal to protect our guys who go to those areas.”

Lubbock County currently houses the drone for the district. However, if the drone is needed, it will be flown out to Abilene, Wichita Falls or anywhere else that needs it. This will continue until they can find a steady source of funding to buy more.

“We would like this to be state wide, but these drones are $20,000 a piece,” said Sims. “In order for that to happen, more people are needed to get involved.”
