Nancy Wid went to pick up her medicine at the pharmacy, but noticed they actually gave her the wrong prescription. Luckily, she’s been a nurse for decades so she picked up on the mistake instantly.
“It was one I wasn’t supposed to have anymore because it had been replaced with a similar medication,” said Wid.
Some of the problems you can face when you take the wrong prescription are nausea, vomiting, and other side effects. Which is why it’s so important to make sure you’re given the right one.
The pharmacy fixed the prescription for Wid, but she said this is a learning lesson for everyone. You have to double check the label on the bottle, just in case there are any mistakes.
“Know what it’s for. Know what it is. Know the side affects. Read up on the side affects,” said Wid.
Ms. Wid also adds it’s important to get all your medication from the same pharmacy to avoid any kind of mix-up.
“If a person has multiple doctors, it’s a good idea for that person or patient to let their family nurse practitioner. Their family doctor to let them know what medication they’re on. All of them. From all their different doctors. Because their family doctor needs to know,” said Wid.
That means vitamins and any over the counter medicine, too.
“The pharmacist needs to know too because in my estimation again. A pharmacist is the last safeguard. The pharmacy and the pharmacist. Last safe guard to prevent medication error,” Wid said.
She said the pharmacist knows more about medication than anyone. If you have any doubts, don’t be afraid to ask questions.
