Utah is in the spotlight after being the first state to allow a “Free-Range” Parenting law. The law protects parents from being prosecuted for letting their children roam freely, like playing at the park unsupervised or walking home from school alone.
Some Lubbock parents said it is good for kids to roam alone because it helps teach them responsibility.
“There are ways to follow kids home from school and keep them safe, but you should also let them learn to take care of themselves, too,” Sarah Trusdell, a local mom, said.
“I think children need to be supervised, but I don’t think helicopter parenting is a thing, and they shouldn’t have to be side by side all the time,” said Rhonda Look, a local grandmother.
The local Parenting Cottage said there is no law currently in Texas similar to the “Free-Range” Parenting law. Arkansas recently turned down a similar law.
