When tropical storms hit, local sand bag company BJ’s Sand Baggers ships its product to the coast to help.
“We sent 20 semi loads down there in about a week,” owner Barry Joachim said about Hurricane Harvey relief efforts last fall.
Joachim said the bags help stop water from entering the homes and commercial areas.
“As soon as people start to panic, that’s when we starting to bag it up and get it ready to go,” Joachim said.
He said he started this company in Lubbock because he calls the Hub City home, but the majority of his product is shipped to other parts of the state and the country.
“You don’t really know what’s going on. Water is coming out of the sky, and you’re getting flooded. So, my best advice is to just plan ahead and take a bit of history and move forward. It’ll be a lot cheaper,” Joachim said.
