A family out of Abernathy is mourning the loss of their 14-year-old daughter, Madison Coe, after they believe she was electrocuted while taking a bath.
Coe, from Abernathy, Texas, was found at her father’s home in Lovington, New Mexico, unresponsive after the family believes she reached for her cell phone, which was plugged into an outlet.
“She was at Lovington, at her dad’s house taking a bath and had her phone plugged into her charger in an outlet charging. We suppose the phone was at the edge of the tub and she reached for it to answer a text or change her music and that’s when she was electrocuted,” Donna Pruitt O’Guinn, grandmother of Madison said.
“We haven’t gotten the results back yet, but it’s pretty obvious what happened from what her dad told us. He’s a firefighter and EMT in Lovington and that’s what he told us. He tried CPR until the ambulance got there and they worked on her for a very long time in the emergency room,” O’Guinn said.
With cell phones being second nature these days, the family said they hope this can be a learning lesson for others when it comes to using cell phones around water.
“My daughter said if this could save one life that’s what matters. If awareness of how Madison died will save one life, that’s what we want but I believe it will save thousands,” O’Guinn said.
