Wood Racing Stable, a local horse race training facility has one horse qualified for the The All American Futurity, a race for two-year-old American Quarter Horses to run at Ruidoso Downs Race Track in Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico.
“He just ran the right race at the right time for the trials. There were 14 trials for this race for two days and you have to be in the top five times for each of those days and that’s how he qualified,” Blane Woods, the owner of Wood Racing Stable said.
The horse named Mr. Secret Glory, is owned by Johnny Trotter, but was trained to race at Wood Racing Stables. The family said this business started in Lubbock and has become a family tradition to get a horse qualified for the All American Futurity each year.
“Our dream is to win the All American Futurity. If you’re in the quarter horse industry that’s pretty much the pinnacle to win that race. My dad won that race back in 1979 and we’ve been trying to do it ever since,” Wood said.
The race hosts prelims starting with 300 horses and eventually gets down to just 10 to race. Wood said they have high hopes for Mr. Secret Glory and they’re anticipating the race.
“To win the All American, to win this race, that would be the ultimate dream. Not for this horse but for my family, for the jockey and for the people who own him. That’s what we would want to do it’s like the Olympics,” Wood said.
KLBK will be showing the race live on Labor Day, September 4th from 6:00-6:30 p.m.
