The Lubbock Boys and Girls Club started construction on its newest club facility off 26th Street and Kewanee Avenue: the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Boys and Girls Club.

“This is a dream come true. We’ve wanted to do this for a long time and serve more children. That is what we do at the Boys and Girls Club,” said Tom Vermillion, executive director for the Lubbock Boys and Girls Club.

The organization has five local locations. Vermillion said the new club will be the first one located in West Lubbock.

“This is a great location, and with the land donated from the city, this is a great opportunity for us,” Vermillion said.

The land, Vermillion said, is located next to a City of Lubbock-owned park. However, the city had held this land for a few years in hopes of the organization opening a new club.

“We serve 2,600 boys and girls, and once this is done, we will serve over 3,000,” Vermillion said.

It only costs $10 for kids to be members for the whole school year.
