This weekend Lubbock is anticipating thousands of out-of-town visitors for Texas Tech’s graduation ceremonies. In the past, hotel owners said friends and families had to book months in advance for the celebration. But with a major influx of hotel properties in town, that is no longer an issue.
“People really start booking January, February and by March we wouldn’t have rooms left for graduation weekend but for this year we still have rooms left,” Rob Meyer, President of the Lubbock Hotel, Motel Association said.
Since 2014, Meyer said there have been over 1,000 hotel rooms added and he said as of March 2017 there are currently 600 rooms in construction.
“It’s still a high demand weekend, we’re just overwhelmed with rooms. That’s probably why we’re not getting as much money as we did in 2014,” Meyer said.
This weekend’s commencement will take place at the United Supermarkets Arena. Ceremonies begin Thursday at 3 p.m. then continue all day Saturday starting at 9 a.m..
