Lubbock police have a new way to fight crime, and it starts with your smartphone.

Neighbors by Ring is an app specifically designed to give neighbors a platform to report crimes in the area. Police then check the posts and actively work on investigating the claims.

“It’s great to have neighbors talking to each other, but what’s really important is that law enforcement puts that information to good use, and that’s our ultimate goal here,” said Morgan Culbertson, a public relations coordinator for Neighbor by Ring.

Culberston said the app is the first of its kind, by giving police another innovative way to help keep Lubbock neighborhoods safe.

“There is so much potential to share information online, but this is the first niche app that’s specific to crime and safety alerts,” Culberston said.

The app can also help give neighbors peace of mind when something seems like a scary situation, but is not in reality.

“What may look like a suspicious person may actually be a confused grandfather, or a salesperson,” said Culberston. “This way you know if it’s relevant to you, and can help dispel fear in the community.”

However, should something happen, Culberston said neighbors can trust the app to have the most up-to-date information for everything in your area.

“That notification will let you know how close you are to something, how relevant it is and the general safety of you neighborhood,” said Culberston.
